I have an old Kubota riding lawn mower, G5200 diesel. I connected a new battery and it ran for a minute then?
slowly died. I may have criss-crossed the terminals, but has anyone ever heard of an engine running for a minute then dying, if the terminals were switched? I discinnectd the battery, reconected it, and now nothing, no power, no turn-over, nothing. Any ideas as to what may have happened?
Thanks for the help lifIe sucks. I traced the cables and I definately crossed the terminals. I thought it strange that the pre-light didn't come on, but it did start. The funny part is that it ran for a minute, then slowly died, like it was running out of fuel. I guess now I have serious issues as I have charged the battery all night and connected it properly and I have no juice. Must have fried something somewhere, do you think it is anything I can fix myself or do I need a mechanic? The cables look fine, and I do not see anything that looks burned, did not smell anything while it was running, either. Thanks for your help, I am an idiot and learned a lesson.
crossing the terminals is BAD. it can do damage to your electrical system. follow the battery terminal leads, the negative lead will be attached to the frame or engine usually black in color. the positive lead will go to a solenoid or the starter, usually red in color. if it is real cold out where you live like it is here, Diesel can jell up. put a winter time fuel conditioner additive made for Diesel fuel into the tank, let it sit for a bit and try again. hopefully no damage has been done to your system by crossing the leads because that's a whole other bad of worms. most Diesel engines have a hand pump in the fuel system. it can loose prime and get air in the lines which will cause it not to run or to do what your experiencing. so look it up on line if you don't have the owners manual and see if it can be primed manually. EDIT; have the battery tested it may be not be taking a charge or may be no good being you had the leads switched. once you get a good power supply check to see if any fuses are blown. then you have to trace the power. a multimeter helps here. check power to solenoid, starter, ignition switch etc. your basically looking for a fault or break in the power source. ALSO CHECK THE GROUND, the ground if loose or rusty wont allow the power to complete the circuit. I have been doing this for a long time and electrical problems can be frustrating even for me. so if you don't have the tools or knowledge in this field bring it to your nearest Kubota dealer and explain what happened and they will fix her up for you. a bad battery will cause a engine to not run properly also so if your lucky that may be your only problem. good luck
