How do I have a successful indoor garden?
I'd like to start an indoor garden, growing things like spinach, tomatoes, and herbs. I have no idea where to start, though. My house has lots of windows, plus a large bay window I could make into a garden area.
How do I start and maintain an indoor garden for successful results? Should i fertilize it?
Thanks!
I have no idea what the first answer means...
You can grow some leafy greens with four hours of direct sunlight, but tomatoes need six hours of sun to survive, eight hours to produce, and twelve hours of sunlight is ideal. There are very few houses where windows provide this much light, especially in the short days of winter.
In the short, cloudy days of December, you need artificial light to produce tomatoes in a greenhouse with full exposure to the sun.
If you don't enough sun, it would take 1,000 watts of grow lights to match the power of direct sun on a three by three foot garden. You could reduce the wattage somewhat because of indirect sun.
It takes a lot of light to produce food; humans are solar powered.
