Why is the ignition switch stuck on my 1998 Dodge Caravan?
I have a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport. The ignition switch is stuck in the "lock" position and will not turn. The steering wheel is not locked, so I don't think that's the problem. I've tried three different keys. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

I have the factory key though it doesnt work. I will try what you have said. You are very helpful
I have had Dodge's, that have done this, before. And, like yours, the steering wheel was not locked, but, I couldn't get the key out. The first thing I tried, was to move the steering wheel back and forth. Somtimes, this works, don't ask why... The other thing, I do, is to make sure the automatic transmission shift lever is firmly in park. On mine, at least, if you don't have it in park, exactly, you can't remove the key. You can try this. It works for me, anyhow. Otherwise, it sounds to me, like, your ignition switch may be worn. By this, I mean, the tumblers inside the switch. When these tumblers get worn, you key doesn't work like it should. One other thing that could be a miss, is the rods, inside the steering colum. These rods go from the ignition switch, to the steering wheel. One or both of these rods could be bent, just enough, to cause you to not be able to turn your ignition switch. While you are trying to turn the ignition switch, turn your steering wheel, back and forth, at the same time. This might help. It does for me. The keys you have tried, are they the ones, from the factory, or, are they ones that you had made as extras? Cause, I have had keys made, that, that either work hard, or, not at all. So, don't rule out the the extra keys, either. Cause, they can cause problems, as well. As a last effort, you may want to call a locksmith, and, see if they have any suggestions, or, see if they could come and look at your van, and, maybe give you some ideas, as to what is happening. Also, you may have to have the van towed to the Dodge dealer. They have books, and the knowhow to fix the problem.
