I have a Beau Gregory Damsel and its turning black, is this bad?
I have a 16 month old 50 gallon tank with 7 small fish (2 clowns, 2 Engineer Gobies, 1 Green Chromus, and 2 Beau Gregory Damsels), great filtration, 600 gph of circulation, 50 lbs of cured live rock, 2 metal hydride bulbs, 1 urchin, plenty of crabs and crustaceans. I do not have a biological filter, nor do I have a dropoff. The damsels have maintianed a prime location under liverock, I have ample swimming room and plenty of places for the fish to hide. First only one Damsel was turning black, now they both are, I am not sure if this is a sign of distress.
Possibly not. Was the fish blue and yellow up until now? That's theur juvenile coloration. As adults, they're a drab gray: http://home1.gte.net/s0da/pics/gregory_icon.jpg They may just be maturing.
The only other conditions that would cause a fish to turn black are the presence of too much ammonia or other chemical irritant in the water. Test your water if you're able to do so, and check the behavior of the other fish, since they should also be affected if the cause is something in the water. Otherwise, I'd just chalk this up to your fish getting older and changing color.
