does anyone know how to care for a coconut plant?
My husband went to Acapulco last week and brought back a coconut seed with roots already growing. He planted it in a 5 gal. pot and we are worried that with some of the cold weather...(we are in Ca.) in the evenings that the plant might freeze and die. We did go to Home Depot and ask there, and they told us to look for a Planket. Well they didnt have any there and we've called Nurseries and other Garden shops with no luck... we need to keep this plant warm... any suggestions??? Thanx in advance for your replies.....
I dont think a coconut will be able to survive california during the winter without some type of artifical heat. The plant must get to 80F every day to do well, and cannot freeze, so everytime temperatures even approach 40 its time to bring it in, and it cant go into the 40s every night.
thge planket would be a good idea to protect it from frost, but it still wont solve the heat issue. They were selling plankets by my home depot and they retain heat very well, but coconuts need tropical sun and heat to do there best.
Even in south florida where these plants thrive, they will not grow during the winter because days are only in the upper 70s (the keys are an exception and coconuts will grow all year long there).
They can be overwintered indoors by a south window. You might want to get something to heat it up a bit, like some grow lights or something.
I live up north and my coconut says in a room which is in the upper 70s to mid 80s and its doing pretty well in there. During the summer it does fantastic, and a leaf will literally shoot up in the middle of the summer where days are humid and usually in the upper 80s to low 90s.
Good luck!
