Pruning previously neglected Hybrid Tea Roses?
I have two hybrid tea roses (one is a fragrant cloud and the other is a sterling silver) in large pots, and I have had them for about 5-7 years. I haven't ever pruned them and although they are both still alive, they have growing shoots every which way, and not looking very healthy. The last time they bloomed, the flowers didn't look how they used to (the sterling silver didn't even look purple). I'm not really sure what to do with them now because I'd like them to be healthy little rose bushes, and not quite so scraggly. Can anyone who knows about roses tell me what I should do with them? I think perhaps they need to be trimmed, but I'm not sure.
I live in an area where we get a little frost in the winter, but the climate is pretty mild, we don't get snow and usually no really freezing weather.
Whack off the top of these roses now. Examine the root, there will be a big bulge at the graft joint (where the tea rose was grafted to wild rose root.) Cut ANY stems coming from below this bulge out and pitch them. NOW, decide on the heathiest 4-5 canes you have, prune to about 8-10" from ground, cut all others away and pitch out. IF the canes are big, paint cut ends with plant sealer to prevent insects from invading canes. In Februaruy, feed well with Miracle grow to instructions. As the rose blooms and the bloom fades, count down 5 leaves and cut! Flowers only come on new growth. You do not want a wild mess again. Happy Holidays.
