Why are Koi fish in Japan so expensive compared to Koi fish sold in the US?
The price of Koi fish in Japan can be anywhere from $1,500 ~ $20,000. Koi fish bred in the US sell for about $15~$30. Are the fish different? I thought they were the same type of fish. Why is there such a drastic price difference? Is it the method of breeding?
There is no reason to say that Japanese imports have stronger genes than American bred koi. They are only one generation removed, so that's not enough time to produce genetic differences.
Many of the really expensive koi are expensive, not because of their genetics, but because they are less than one in a thousand. Colors are genetic, but the exact placement of them on the fish are largely random. Fish with certain desirable patterns cost a lot more because a thousand or ten thousand other fish may have to be raised up with them to find that fish with a perfectly symmetrical pattern, or a pattern that suggests something from Japanese history or mythology. Depending on how interested you are in Japanese culture may decide whether you place that same value on that fish, or if you should let someone to whom it means more become the owner.
The other reason for the price is desire to get something exotic or better, whether it really is or not. It's like Japanese and other foreign cars. There are many people who believe in spite of facts and history that they are getting a better product by buying an import car. It's like the book Unsafe At Any Speed which turned out to be completely falsified, but still completely wiped out demand for one model of American made car and depressed the entire US car industry and the total world economy. Consumers are easy to fool and there are people who are willing to fool them. Still, if you get Japanese fish directly from Japan, you know you are buying them for the rarity of that particular fish and for how many others had to grow alongside it. If you buy fish labeled as from Japan, they may be only the less valuable siblings of that one worthy koi, no different from any US bred koi.
