how easy is it to make some wooden driveway gates?
I need to make some gates that need to be 9ft wide in total and approx 6ft high, what wood is best to use and what method is best?
i would use pressure treated softwood (will last forever). i consider a gate simple to make but i am a carpenter. i would use 4x2 for the frame timber, and something around 6x3/4 for the face. it would be best to do it in 2 gates. simply cut your face timber to 6ft and space it out with a small gap between each board to allow wind to pass through and not knock your gate over. nail the 4x2 across these one up about 6 inches, one down 8 inches and one in the middle, these are spaced like so for fixing hinges to. you'll then need more 4x2 going at an angle from top to middle and bottom to middle to stop at the ends. just take a peek at neighbours gates for design idea's. if there are block pillars each side just fix 4x2 to it to as a framing piece and use heavy t bar hinges.
