Christmas Flowers Using Holly
Decorating with Christmas flowers is a very beautiful way to celebrate during the holidays. Christmas flowers, Balsam fir, Fraser fir, Noble firs, white pine, Scotch pine and the Douglas fir are used in the creation of the Christmas wreath or holiday wreath. Many people choose to hang a wreath on their front door as a welcome to those who step over the threshhold during the holiday season or anytime during the year.
During the holidays or anytime during the year, it is always a good idea to send flowers to those we love and care about and do not get the chance to see very often. Our homes are a good place to start decorating with flowers and we seem to want to use more of them during the Christmas season. Some of the most popular Christmas flowers include Holly, Christmas rose, Mistletoe, Christmas cactus, Ivy, and the Poinsettia. They generally bring more color into the home and give off an air of festivity during the holidays.
The holly is a meaningful Christmas flower to many Romans, Christians, and Islams. It communicates enjoyment and delight plus good luck and good fortune. The holly bush along with its beautiful berries springs forth friendship, love, kindness, and affection to all those we send it to during the holidays. Holly can also restore fellowship to any relationship and will bring out love and devotion between individuals.
There are a number of species of holly trees and holly shrubs, which can be found in all but two of the continents. Those two exceptions are Antarctica and Australia. Holly can be found in several sizes, beginning with a dwarf six inch high shrub all the way to a tree that could reach seventy feet tall. The shapes also vary from columnar to pyramidal to round. Some landscape designers use holly shrubs or bushes planted around house foundations and others use them as borders around garden beds. Tall holly shrubs or holy trees can be used to create privacy hedges from neighbors or to block out traffic noise; they can also be planted strategically in your landscape as striking winter flowers.
The majority of the holly trees and shrubs are evergreen plants but you can also find some that are deciduous. A native of the eastern part of the United States and Eastern Canada is the winterberry holly, which is a deciduous plant. One of the characteristics of this particular holly is its ability to tolerate different growing conditions. Many of the holly cultivars need a well-drained soil, but the natural habitat of the winterberry is the wetlands. Because of this trait they have the ability to do well in either a wet soil or a well-drained soil. The winterberry holly will lose its leaves shortly before the arrival of Christmas, but their red berries will be more visible and spectacular because of this.
The English holly (ilex aquifolium) and the American holly (ilex opaca) are seen more often because of their beautiful evergreen foliage. Some English holly varieties can grow quite tall; the Ferox Argentea can reach as high as 15 feet and spread out to 8 to 10 feet. The American holly is native to most of the Atlantic Coast states and the Southeastern portion of the United States. The USDA Forest Service noted that when the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts in 1620 that they found American holly growing. An American holly plant, the Mac's Prince, can grow to reach 15' to 30' and have a 10' to 20' spread.
Holly, as one of many Christmas flowers, can be found in Christmas decorations including the Christmas wreaths. Holly bushes and shrubs also add visual interest in landscapes in cold climates that are normally without color in the winter. There are several bird species that find these Christmas flowers very attractive such as blackbirds and thrushes. It has also been noted by the USDA Forest Service that bobwhites, goldfinches, mourning doves, waxwings, and wild turkeys also find the holly a tasty tidbit.
