Question about US SWAT Teams?
Around what year did the SWAT teams go from wearing Blue Baseball caps to the Kevlar helmets of the early 1980's? And did (I know this is a bad to be comparing them to the TV Show SWAT) they look like this when the first SWAT teams came into existence. When did they start using the Heckler & Koch in place of the M-16 and the break down shield and ram?
Military historian and some Law Enforcement but not SWAT information..
I think SWAT teams have always worn Kevlar helmets but team leaders and negotiators may not if they are not directly in the line of fire. I think SWAT teams sometimes do use M-16s and M-4s but the point-man or other members of the team who are going to be clearing a house room by room usually use the H&K MP5 which may be replaced by the H&K MP7 which has better stopping power and can penetrate body armor. It also chambers a larger round than the MP5.
