Snow Globe- a snow ball in fairyland
The snow globe was very popular in Europe and its popularity spread to England during the Victorian Era. It crossed the Atlantic into America in 1920. The first snow globe patent in America was held by Joseph Garaja in 1927.
The Snow Globe became a collector's item and when their popularity increased it was used for advertising, as gifts for children and even in election campaigns.
The first snow globes were mounted on black ceramic bases. A small scene or figure was fixed onto it and then covered by the glass ball made out of thick glass containing water and the small shavings of porcelain or sand that made up the snow and then sealed. These were heavy. As the years went by the ceramic bases were replaced by bake lite and the heavy glass by plastic.
The principle of the snow globe can be utilized in various ways. During Christmas time the snow globe may be used as a stomach for Santa Claus and the rest of the image built around it. Figures of a snowman, the nativity scene or a winter scene are popular Christmas themes. To some, music boxes were added that when wound up would play well loved Christmas carols. Today a snow globe can be made with moving parts and also be lit up. An electric blower could be used to give the impression of ever twirling snow flakes.
The principle is applied for holiday time lawn decorations. The base is fitted with a blower that blows in small Styrofoam balls into an inflatable ball made out of transparent vinyl. The scenes or images are made out of nylon. Specially protected lights, light up the globe without any damage to the material due to heat.
A variation of the snow globe is the tornado globe. The characteristic of the snow globe was the image of falling snow. In the tornado globe, small objects fly all over the inside. This is popular at Halloween when bats and other Halloween images spin inside the globe.
The snow globe has also made its mark in films. Citizen Kane, Elf, The Santa Clause, Blinky Bill's white Christmas, Miami Vice, Unfaithful are some of the films where the snow globe has had a part to play. In the world of literature, Going Bovine by Libba Gray, Alice Seobold's The lovely Bones and Watchmen portray the effect of the snow globe on its characters.
